The difference, essentially, between a robot and an android is that an android is designed to look more Human (for one reason or another) and a robot looks, well, like a robot (and thats opening a whole other can of worms, if youre interested in that, start with Al Jazari and go from there).

Why we want it?

The applications for Human-like robots are actually endless. Android firefighters could rescue people from areas inaccessible to Human beings, android surgeons would never miss a mark and their pleasant, Human-like appearance would certainly be preferable to some sort of scary surgical machine (if we were forced to choose, that is).

Ever since NASA launched a new group of tiny, phone-powered satellites into space a few weeks ago, we’ve been waiting for one of the little PhoneSats to phone home. Now, one of the nano-satellites has successfully communicated with Earth, an important test of a much-needed capability.

Engineers at NASAs Ames Research Center are currently in the middle of testing two-way communications technology on one of the PhoneSat experimental satellites they shot into space a couple weeks ago. On Wednesday, the tiny satelliteweighing only about 2.2 pounds, or the size of 20 CDs stacked into a cubeused its S-band radio to make a call the ground monitoring station at Santa Clara University, in California, signaling to the engineers that it was ready to receive commands.

The satellite is called a PhoneSat because the satellites brain is basically built around a heavily modified Samsung Nexus S, running off the shelf Android software.

This new version of the PhoneSatthe first version went to space earlier this yearuses more heavily modified Nexus phones than previously. NASA has stripped away or disable many of the components they dont needfor example, the engineers removed the screen and enclosure, as neither are necessary to operate a satellite. Basically, the only thing left over is whatevers attached to the circuit board, said Cockrell.

The engineering team also replaced the standard Nexus battery with a much more powerful Lithium Ion battery pack thats charged via solar cellsalso bought off-the-shelfcustom fitted to the PhoneSats outer hull. Interestingly enough, the engineers chose to use factory second solar cells, or remnants from older solar arrays in order to, you guessed it, build panels on the cheap. The engineering team then had to construct custom mounts and boards, Cockrell said.

The whole point of the PhoneSat program is twofold: to first determine if its even possible to operate space faring vehicles with off-the-shelf consumer technology. And so far, it looks like it is. The second reason NASA is interested in building satellites out of smartphones is discover the cheapest possible way to build a useful spacefaring satellite. Versus traditional satellites, smartphonesand so too the PhoneSatshave thousands of times faster computational speeds, and many times more memory, said Cockrell.

Manufacturers have invested gazillions of dollars into research and development of smartphones, Cockrell said, Countless research dollars make them fast, with a large memory and a lot of sensors. And if NASA invested in similar technology it would likely require millions and millions of dollars, Cockrell said.

Cheap satellites have a number of advantagesif they can survive spaces rigors, Cockrell said. If the program proves successful, they would allow NASA to take a different approach while exploring the universe. With multiple copies of your satellite, even if one fails, you can afford to have another one at the system level still functioning, the engineer said.

The materials in each PhoneSat 2.4as this iteration is calledcost approximately $7,500, off the shelf. The PhoneSats design and fabrication took about a year by a team of fewer than 10 engineerswho are all entry level, Cockrell said. Usually only senior NASA engineers work on satellite projects, but since the cost is lower, its feasible to give junior engineers a shot.

The next version, 2.5, is set to launch in February aboard a commercial SpaceX rocket and will continue to test the two-way radio and orientation systems, according to NASA officials. Early Saturday, Zello released an update to its Walkie Talkie application that added a new ability for the user to mute and unmute on the fly. This was the most notable addition to the application and the first addition we’ve seen on Zello in some time (if you don’t count the UI changes that occurred in December).

In addition to the new mute settings, Zello version 2.44 also fixes a “rare condition” when the recipient receives a notification sound only, but no message. If you’ve experienced this before, let us know if the new version still gives you this issue.

Zello also fixed the feature that allows users to Talk to all moderators and also included an assortment of additional bug fixes that were not broken down individually, which is normal for most minor updates that are rolled out.

Unlike business enterprise zones which offer financial incentives to companies, the aim of rural social enterprise is to boost the local economy and care for the environment.
Civil Society Minister Nick Hurd said it was about “businesses who wanted to use profit for social good”. Organisations involved include Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Cornwall, the Eden Project and Community Energy Plus.

Cornwall’s rural social enterprise designation is the first in the UK and was accredited by Social Enterprise UK (SEUK). Its chief executive Peter Holbrook said it was an outstanding achievement for Cornwall which he said was “one of the most dynamic places in the UK for social enterprise”.
‘Community spirit’ He said the duchy was a “hive of social enterprise” and the combination of public and private collaboration was exceptional.

“It has both the volume and quality when it comes to creativity and it has that great local community spirit,” he said. “Cornwall’s status as a rural social enterprise zone means that business leaders, politicians and public agencies recognise that social enterprise has a key role to play in shaping the future of Cornwall,” he added.
Fifteen Cornwall was set up as the Cornwall Food Foundation charity in 2006 as a chef training programme and restaurant with the intention of providing qualifications and a future for young people in the Duchy who had hit hard times.

Of the 120 apprentices enrolled, more than 90% are in work, and about 70% are chefs. Chief Executive Matthew Thomson said. “Right across the country what we’re seeing is that people making big profits at the expense of other people is no longer acceptable,
“What a social enterprise structure can give you is a way of levelling out those profits, so that more people get a fair share and the profits are put to work for the community and the environment.”
